About
Mission
Music TORONTO presents and promotes traditional and modern chamber music. We present the highest calibre of international and Canadian artists, introduce artists new to the Toronto audience, foster the development of Canadian artists, and encourage the presentation of Canadian music.
History
Music TORONTO began in 1971 as the music programme of Toronto Arts Productions, presenting chamber music concerts and recitals at the Town Hall – the original name for the Jane Mallett Theatre in the new city-owned facility at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
In 1973, the music programme continued as CentreStage Music. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, CentreStage Music offered Toronto audiences a wide variety of chamber music concerts and recitals. Its most ambitious seasons presented 56 concerts. CentreStage Music also produced special events such as musical theatre, and was instrumental in organizing and presenting major events such as Bach 300 Festival in 1985.
On July 1, 1987, Music TORONTO was established as an independent, non-profit organization, registered in Ontario under the Corporations Act as No. 727661. Music TORONTO is a registered charity, 11904 9849 RR0001.
Throughout its history Music TORONTO has placed special emphasis on the talented Canadian artists, both new and emerging, and to presenting and commissioning music from Canadian composers.
