ALEXANDRE THARAUD

John Terauds in The Toronto Star described
Alexandre Tharaud as the current IT boy of young French
pianists. Of the most recent of his nearly 20 recordings, Couperin: Tic Toc Choc, Terauds continued: At times you wonder how human fingers can achieve such delicate playing. Tharaud graduated from the Paris Conservatoire, and has
devoted much of his interest to French music, though his
recordings extend to Schubert and Bach. Still in his
20s, he has already won all of France's top honours:
several Choc du Monde de la Musique, several Diapason
d'Or, and at least one Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles
Cros. Tharaud plays throughout Europe, the US, Japan
and South Korea as recitalist, chamber musician and
orchestral soloist. We wanted to share in the excitement, so
we invited him to make his Toronto debut.

MARC-ANDRÉ HAMELIN

Tuesday, November 11/08 at 8 p.m. |

Virtuoso Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin
returns to MTO for his 5th recital on our stage (most recently
in Dec. 03). A Montreal native, he lives in
Philadelphia. Long admired by pianophiles, MAH is now in his
mid 40s enjoying a stellar international career. His active
interest in lesser-known repertoire led to a series
of award-winning recordings; he now records
exclusively for Hyperion. The New York Times heard precision, clarity; The Boston Globe found his playing fleet, lucid; The Guardian (UK ) admired his sheer dynamic force.

EVE EGOYAN
|
| Return Home |
Tuesday, December 9/08 at 8 p.m. |
|
It's hard to believe that Eve Egoyan is now in her
early 40s; she has the enthusiasm and intensity of
someone much younger. Long respected as one of
Toronto's great interpreters of contemporary music, she is
now enjoying an international career. The Globe and
Mail admired her clear, uncompromising taste and remarkable playing that balances delicacy with intense focus. Born in Vancouver of Armenian parents, Eve Egoyan enjoyed an
international education: Victoria, Banff, Berlin,
London and finally a master's at U of T. Previous MTO

BARRY DOUGLAS
|
| Return Home |
Tuesday, January 27/09 at 8 p.m. |
|
Barry Douglas played on this series in March 1990,
while still basking in the glory of his 1986 Tchaikovsky
Competition win. Since then he has built an enduring
international career as orchestral soloist, recitalist,
chamber musician, conductor and festival director. The 07-08
season included a US tour with his chamber
orchestra, Camerata Ireland, which he founded in 2001; he
completed his recording of the complete cycle of
Beethoven piano concertos with his ensemble on Satirino
Records in fall 07. Barry Douglas makes his home in Paris and
in Lurgan, Ireland, with his wife and 3 young
children. The Los Angeles Times praised his brio, ease, and a
confident sense of musicality; The London Times (UK)
noted his volatile energy and spiky
articulation.

MARKUS GROH
|
| Return Home |
Tuesday, April 7/09 at 8 p.m. |
|
After winning the Artur Schnabel Competition (Berlin) in 1990 and the German Music Competition (Bonn) in 1993, Markus Groh became the first German ever to win the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition, in 1995 - the late John Browning was on the jury. The Guardian (UK) said he was clearly a talent to
watch. Major orchestras - New York, Philadelphia - are just discovering Markus Groh; we first discovered him in 2001. Indeed, this is his 4th recital for us; he also played
a sensational Schumann Piano Quartet with members
of the Tokyo in Jan. 07. The New York Times thought
he offered the music's bravura as well as the
sensitivity; The Philadelphia Inquirer said Groh's fingers and sense of comprehension set a new modern standard for playing
Liszt.
